![]() ![]() Egan is a master of simple language and deadpan humor. His watercolors portray gentle, realistic versions of wildly unrealistic romps - Paris streets filled with animals strolling, juggling, carrying umbrellas. Egan's art is beautifully funny, in the spirit of Arnold Lobel, James Marshall, and Felicia Bond. The duck imitates a Parisian mime, rings Notre Dame's bells, and launches some unusual paper airplanes - with comically catastrophic results. Dodsworth, the responsible one warns: " 'You can't cause any trouble here.' 'I wouldn't dream of it,' said the duck." Chaos, of course, ensues. Dodsworth and the duck are a classic duo, somewhere between Frog and Toad and Laurel and Hardy. ![]() but trouble is never far from a misbehaving duck! The Barnes & Noble Reviewĭodsworth and the duck, those popular world travelers, sail straight from Dodsworth in New York into their second adventure, Dodsworth in Paris, written and illustrated by Tim Egan. It looks like it is going to turn out to be a great vacation in Paris. They climb the Eiffel Tower, and the duck even finds some bent-over guy who rings bells for a living. It is their first time in the City of Lights, and they are ready for some adventures magnifique! Right away they see mimes, painters, and people wearing berets. ![]() ![]() As it stands, there are 4 almost identical scenes of entire families being eaten alive. The extremely formulaic nature of the mantis attacks would get boring if the book was any longer. ![]() This fact, like a lot of statements in this book, is repeated numerous times throughout the text. He loves watching men being eaten by monsters. The cheer childishness of the protagonist’s motivation is almost profound. Eat Them Alive is so bad it’s phenomenal. We’ve all seen things described as “so bad it’s good”, but this book takes that to another level. The plot sounds ridiculous, but more ridiculous still is the execution. “But now I’ve got something to live for – because I love watching a man being eaten by a monster! Maybe it’s a substitute for my lost virility, but I know it’s a joy I never thought I’d feel again!”įirst off, this is a book about a castrated psychopath who trains an army of giant, flesh-hungry praying mantises to torture and eat his enemies alive. How bout that hokey ending with its proverbial "shootout" to get the audience's attention? And what about Poirot cracking the case in question? These major departures from the book greatly diminished my favor with this film. Allowances must be made, but the script from this adaptation meanders a good deal from much of the source material. It is a great novel and is definitely a hard one to truly bring to the screen(small screen in this case)entirely faithful. ![]() ![]() The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is easily one of the greatest mystery novels and particularly one of Christie's best ever written. It is not a train-a collection of objects moving through space-but a stream, James said. William James, in the late 19 th century, drew attention to the weird nature of consciousness. We can never really know what it is like to be a bat or cat, but thanks to Joyce we have a better idea what it is like to be a human being. Joyce knocks a hole in the prison of our selves so that we can peer into the mind of another person. I’ve written about the problem of solipsism, how each of us is trapped in a hermetically sealed chamber of his or her own subjective awareness. He helped us become more aware of our awareness. Joyce was not a theorist of mind but he was an exceptional observer of it, far more so than any scientist. We eavesdrop on someone’s thoughts as though they are being telepathically transmitted into our brain. ![]() ![]() He put us inside the head of another human, in a way no one had done before. Joyce did something that still feels fresh and revolutionary, although it has inspired countless imitations. To celebrate Bloomsday, I'm reposting an appreciation of Ulysses that I wrote last summer when I re-read the classic 1922 novel. On this day in 1904 Leopold Bloom, hero of James Joyce's great novel Ulysses, wandered through Dublin having all manner of adventures before returning late at night to the bed of his cheating wife Molly. ![]() |
